ASSESSMENT
OF MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON
STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
ABSTRACT
This
research work focus on the Assessment of Motivational Factors in Public
Secondary Schools and its Influence on students’ Academic Performance.
Motivation
is internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to
be continually interest committed to a job, role or subject or to make an
effort to attain a goal.
Motivation
provides us the energy to pulse outcomes. It is essentially about commitment to
doing something from ourselves.
Research
evidence shows that motivational factors in public secondary school will
influence students’ academic performance.
Motivational
factors such as the physiological factors, emotion, habit interest and
incentives. As a result of this the study of assessment of motivational factors
in public secondary schools and its influence on students academic performance
worth pursing. It is hoped that the result of the study will provide evidence
motivational factors will influence student academic performance.
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
The teacher
has very important role to play in other to succeed in his/her work but if
children are properly motivated then learning become meaningful and successful.
“Motivation”
come from Latin word “Mooveers” which means to move. We can then say that in
its literal meaning, motivation is the process of arousing or attracting
movement in the individuals towards the achievement of some goals. According to
the book of (NTI) National teacher institute (2002) Motivation can be define as
the process by which the learner’s internal energies are directed his
environment.
Vernon
(1999) Define motivation as “The hidden urge within us, which compels us to
behave in a certain ways such an urge may be purely instinctive that emanates
within us.
Ajayi (2002)
Says Motivation can be define as the needs desires interest or consideration of
reason that arouses a person and direct him towards a specific goal.
According to
Princhard and Ashwood (2012) say. Is the process used to allocate energy to
maximize the satisfaction or a desired goal.
Emily says
motivation is the incentive that is given for inspiration to accomplish
something. Motivation can persuade someone to think a certain or a drive that
moves them do a certain thing.
Signund
(2012) says motivation put forth a mechanical model of human behavior instead
of recognizing that human behavior is purpose driving i.e. is driving by a need
to discharge.
Wandy (2008)
says motivation as reason, incentive, enthusiasm, or interest that causes a
specific action or certain behavior.
Motivation
is internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to

effort to attain a goal.

Motivational
factors such as the physiological factors, emotion, habit interest and
incentives. As a result of this the study of assessment of motivational factors

1.2 Purpose of the Study
i. The purpose of study therefore
is summarized as follows. To find out what extent motivational factors
influence the performance of public secondary schools.
ii. To find out the impact of
motivational factors in teaching and learning process.
iii. To find out what extent does it makes
teaching and learning an easy task to teachers and the learners.
iv. To find out what extent can
motivational factors can be advantageous or disadvantageous to teaching and
learning process.
1.3 Statement of Problem
In spite of
various governmental commitments toward education, it has been observed that
the educational system is not achieving its set goals because the system is
faced with many regards.
Ajayi (2002)
highlighted the problem of high rate of failure academically which is notable
in term of poor performance i.e. in public examination and high rate student
dropout.
However, in
this project work, investigation concerned with motivational factors, how it
can influence students academic performance. What impact motivational factors
can take in teaching and learning if students are properly motivated would it
change the performance of the student from bad to good?
1.4 Research Questions
An attempt
is made to find answers to the following research questions.
1. To what extent can motivational
factors influence the academic performance of the public secondary schools?
2. To what extent motivational factors
have an impact on the academic performance of the public secondary schools?
3. To what extent does motivational
factors makes teaching and learning an easy task?
4. To what extent can motivational
factors have advantage or disadvantage to teaching and learning?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
i. Motivational factors will not
significantly depend on academic performance of the public secondary school.
ii. Motivational factors will not
significantly have impact on academic performance of the learners.
iii. Motivational factors will not
significantly make teaching and learning and easy task.
iv. Motivational factors will not
significantly have advantage or disadvantage to teaching and learning process.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study
will help the curriculum planners to know the important aspect of motivational
factors in the teaching and learning in public secondary schools. This study
will be of greater importance to both teacher and students also teacher will
know that if students are motivated during teaching learning process, they will
achieve their objectives and produce good skilled in public secondary schools.
The study will help the student to realized that teaching and learning is an
easy task.
1.7 Scope/Delimitation of the Study
The study
covered some selected Lagos State Senior Secondary schools. In Ojo Local
Government Area.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
The
limitation of the study could be attributed to two main factors namely;
1. Financial Constraints: The study will
be restricted to four (4) Senior Secondary Schools in Ojo Local Government
Area.
2. Time Constraints: Time available for
the study was limited and so it was fairly difficult to cover more than four
(4) schools.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Ø Assessment: It an opinion or a judgment of
what has been thought.
Ø Motivations: Is the process of arousing or
attracting the interest of the individual to an activity.
Ø Factors: This are thing that influence
something e.g. environment.
